Multi-award-winning Nigerian Afro-fusion musician, Burna Boy, gives the Black Lives Matter movement a huge boost as he wins the Best International Act for the annual Black Entertainment Television (BET) Award, a second time, making him the first artiste to win BET’s Best International Act award for two years in a row. Last year, Burna Boy won the Best International Act category at the BET Awards, when his mother and manager, Bose Ogulu, accepted the award on his behalf with a mind-blowing acceptance speech centred on black excellence.
This year, the African Giant accepted the award and once again, focused his speech on the Black Lives Matter mantra when he said: “In order for black lives to matter, Africa must matter.”As a proponent of Africa and Blackness, this is not the first time the Burna Boy has spoken about injustices, the world over, through his music platform. The annual Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards celebrates creative expression and black excellence across music, film, television, sports and philanthropy. It was held virtually this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was broadcast on BET Africa in the early hours of Monday, June 29, 2020. With all these achievements, Burna Boy is still relentless as he is set to release the first video for his latest hit single ‘Wonderful’, off his ‘Twice As Tall’ album slated for release later this year.
